Standard Color Separations vs. Achromatic Color [Gray Component Removal (GCR)] The standard color separation halftone printing process is based on the combined effects of additive and subtractive color-mixing principles. In chromatic process-color printing, all hues, as well as black and neutral gray, essentially are made with the three basic inks. Though it varies by print house, press operator, press manufacturer, and press run, ink is typically applied in the order of the abbreviation. The "K" in CMYK stands for key because in four-color printing, cyan, magenta, and yellow printing plates are carefully keyed, or aligned, with the key of the black key plate.

Jeff Harrison over 11 years ago in reply to Rodrigo 2011-06-08 · RGB has its place in printing, just not in conventional offset printing. You can design with RGB, ONLY if you are printing off the NexPress.
so say we’ve pulled our percentages down to something a little more sensible, but it’s still CMYK as we want a slightly toned shade of grey, not a totally black (K) grey. What will happen when this is printed is because the colour is a block but still made up from four different colours, it will change slightly across the print run. This chart is intended as a reference guide only. PANTONE Computer Video simulations displayed may not exactly match PANTONE®-identified color standards. The other three options (CMYK, Gray and Spot) have to do with commercial printing. For our purposes here, and unless you're working with a commercial printer, you can leave all three options set to their defaults.

We should all know by now that RGB documents are meant for screens, and CMYK documents are meant for printing. Therefore, when you print a CMYK document and you need a really rich black it’s important to remember one thing: 100% K isn’t the blackest black (that’s what adobe products default to when black is selected).

With CMYK for print however, things are quite another matter… First of all, the colours that fall within the printable range are considerably less than RGB. Also, most of the print-based colours don’t have the vibrancy of RGB screen colours, which means they look flatter, duller and sometimes, just plain muddy. The CMYK system is NOT used in HTML or style sheets, but is a popular form of color representation, and is shown here to help you get an insight into color representation and for comparison to the ways you can define colors in HTML or style sheets; you can use a quick reference table to help you choose from among the many color tables available.
Rich black is created by blending all of the CMYK colors, resulting in a more rich and saturated tone. Make sure not to over-saturate the paper by setting all colors to the 100 maximum. The trick is to keep the bulk of the grey scale in K so that variations are minimal. We just did a 5 colour print run with CMYK+K, it was mainly to have a nice rich black backround without getting too much ink.
